Supporting our Families
Since March 2020, everything has changed - except the solidarity of our LEAP family. The day our school closed last spring, our teachers packed school supplies, books and tablets, which we delivered to families in stages through the spring and summer. Through our partnership with Porch Durham, we have been able to give our families food and gift cards for food shopping.
In June, 77% of the COVID cases in Durham County were in the Latino community. In response to many of our students' parents being laid-off or becoming sick, we began making grants to families so they could pay their rent and remain housed.
In the fall of 2020, we started seeing our preschool students in person again - in small groups outside - as well as online. Our tutoring students and their tutors are meeting online through zoom. We are continuing to work with community partners to give our families access to food and other forms of support. We are also continuing to assist families with financial needs ourselves - because that's what families do.
Financial donations enable us to meet the changing needs of our families and our organization. Thank you to our many donors!
We are currently raising funds to create an additional preschool classroom, so we can provide more children with the high-quality learning experiences they need - and will benefit our community for their entire lives.
Research on dual-language learning
Why do we teach our preschool children in English and Spanish?
1) Children who continue to develop their first language learn a second language better.
2) Learning a second language develops other invaluable skills as well - such as persistence and problem solving.
3) Becoming fluent in a second language is an asset in today's economy.
4) We show our Latinx families that we respect and value their culture.
It's all good!
